  1. First: Trandoshans use weapons with bullets, and Jedi are able to deflect that with their lightsabers. Second: You asume, that the Lightsaber just are the plasmablade. But: There is a field of resistence showing during the cutting through the door process. Qui Gon just had to put his hands off from the hilt, and the saber would have been stuck in there. That means there has to be something more, not just the plasma blade.. maybe something, that gives the blade some kind of mass? like a shield-technology with mass particles? So in the first place, the bullet would be stopped in its velocity by this, and then there would be enough time to be vaporized by the plasma blade.

  2. im not entirely convinced your giving that blast door enough credit
blast doors are designed to withstand intense heat from explosions and attack (especially ones around the command deck)
    it was also multiple doors
on top of that it would no doubt be some crazy good alloy that has heat resistance properties far superior to anything we have currently available.
yet the light saber cut through it like butter

i think you need to reassess the blast door scene, assume its a metal with the highest heat resistance and then factor the melt time, when he draws the circle it just instantly melts a line in the door

i think sabers plasma particles are moving much faster than what you have calculated

  3. I think light sabers would have a core that might use the same technology that "force fields" use (however they might work). Forcefields protect from damage from things like asteroids and such. So effectively the center would be solid in the middle, surrounded by the plasmaish like effect. Because otherwise an extra strong metal with higher melting point would just pass through the light saber take take out the Jedi rendering it ineffective. They would have worked out that flaw in such a weapon a long long time ago …

  4. Hey kyle absolutly love the show. I do feel like you missed some facts though. For example in the old jedi knight series there where guns called slugthrowers (this name has actually been carried over to Disney books) that used bullets. specifically the imperial heavy repeater. In said series (and other books) said slugs could actualy be reflected by lightsabers.

  5. interesting. now im curious if you used the figures for a 9x19mm bullet with its roughly 550 joules of energy or was the calculations done with the bullet containing zero energy? what would happen if the bullet containing ~550 joules of energy impacted the light saber vs what would happen if the bullet contained no energy. i think you guys did all that calculations for if the bullet contained no energy. either way the bullet gets flash liquefied. i believe that upon impact with the light saber blade the bullet would react in much the same way of playing baseball with a water balloon and a sword. the energy of the projectile becomes extremely dissipated and the bullet loses most of its energy basically just showering the light saber user with basically the equivalent of 1mm sized shot.

  6. If this is the case… if it takes THAT much magnetic energy to ricochet bullets… and Magneto does so effortlessly… then Magneto's powers are far more tremendous than many of us were lead to believe… No?

  7. I'm surprized you didn't find the angle the light saber would be required to be at to 'block' bullets.
I'm my unqualified guess is around 60° would allow the blade the sufficient time to vaporize them.
But then what happens with this super-heated air mass still traveling at 350 m/s?
Or would it all still be moving and not turn into a tiny explosion. Thus preventing most of its mass to not be directed at the jedi/sith, becoming mostly harmless in the intervening space?

  8. In fairness, for the magnetic side of things most military rifle ammunition has a steel core for penetrating armor. Granted, it won't help much for deflecting things, but it might make things more interesting for the poor Jedi with the saber. Also, melting points of steel are much higher than lead, so it would change the equation some.

  9. What if the lightsaber was angled (increasing the effective width of the blade) and moved backwards at jedi-like reaction speeds, to slightly increase the time the bullet spends inside the plasma? Would the magnetic field of the blade also slow the bullet slightly?

  10. I assume the Jedi would use the Force to slow the bullets down enough so that they get vaporized by the lightsaber. Plus, I would think the motion of the lightsaber swinging to meet the bullet would also have an effect on it.

  11. Wait wait wait would the magnetic field at least slow down bullet long enough to give to plasma enough time to vaporize the bullet or is it still to fast and would be just turned into liquid

  12. let's turn off the plasma part and only use the magnetic field can we generate foucault current in the bullet, as in lenz law the force generate by the impact of the current with the magnetic field will slow the bullet down to a degree that we can dodge it. it just like droping a magnet ball through a copper pipe right? i think the equation for the emf is the change in magnetic over time, so the bullet should slow down in the middle of the air and also gona get hotter

  13. Well if you go by the EU then yes actually it can. Since a lightsaber can be calibrated to deflect or combat different types of weapons and projectiles it was done in the comics/books. And projectile weapons are fairly common in Star Wars when it comes to mandalorians, bounty hunters, mercenary groups and the like.

The Verpine for instance make projectile weapons that are essentially handheld rail guns that are so powerful you can load a literal rock into it and it will kill just as effectively as a bullet.

There are also shotguns, assault rifle, sub machine and machine gun type projectile weapons in star wars already and they're never stopped jedi before.

So it's not like this is a threat that jedi haven't come across before.

You can also turn the power of a lightsaber up and down to make the blade weaker or more powerful, training sabers for instance hurt but aren't lethal they burn but they can't cut someone at all. Meaning bullets wouldn't melt.

Also technically you wouldn't even need a lightsaber due to the fact that you can use the force to knock projectiles away or back and even in some cases absorb them in the case of energy weapons.

You also wouldn't need a lightsaber because a jedi could simply wear armor like kenobi did in both clone wars TV series and most if not all forms of armor are pretty much invincible against all but the most powerful forms of projectile weapons in Star Wars. Stormtrooper armor for instance is practically invulnerable vs all but the most powerful projectile weapons.
